Have you tried to incorporate active learning into your teaching, but wondered about its real impact on students’ learning outcomes? What elements make ‘active learning’ active, and how do students react to this way of learning?

This workshop will review the idea of active learning over the past few decades, and then describe Chi’s ICAP Framework as an evidence-based approach to planning active learning activities for students and understanding their outcomes. Active learning is regularly discussed as a change in pedagogy for the instructor, but the paradigm shift it requires for students is often neglected. A critical piece of implementing active learning in the classroom is navigating students’ transition from passive receivers of knowledge to active producers of knowledge.

Workshop Goals:
  • To introduce the ICAP framework as an approach to planning active learning activities
  • To discuss application of ICAP in different disciplinary contexts
  • To assist participants to plan activities or convert existing activities to a mode of engagement that will elicit deeper cognitive processing
  • To demonstrate how ICAP can be utilized to understand student learning outcomes following assessment
  • To discuss students’ reactions to active learning pedagogy and instructor approaches to facilitate students’ acceptance

Themes: Active learning, ICAP Framework, Student beliefs about learning, Student engagement during class
