Online Learning in the Arab World- A Shifting Landscape
Sherif Halawa
This paper presents the results of the authors' analysis of four years of online learning data from Edraak, the largest regional MOOC provider. The results show that the online learning landscape is shifting, with a gradual shift towards younger age learners and higher female-to-male registration ratios. The authors also show that yearly registration rates are growing in some countries and falling in others. Finally, they demonstrate that several of these patterns are correlated with the countries ICT index components, and its gender inequality and gender development indices. They conclude with recommendations for policymakers and researchers in light of the presented results.
