Dr. Sherif Halawa

Head of Engineering and Research
Dr. Sherif Halawa leads the engineering and research team at Edraak, Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development. He currently leads the development of Edraak's educational technology, to improve online learning for over 2.2 million learners in the Arab World, ranging from K-12 students to adult learners.

Sherif's team developed the "Edraak K-12 platform" in 2017-2018, the first platform in the MENA region serving online learning at scale to school students across the Middle East. Sherif also leads on developing new and localized educational technology for parents, teachers, and business and governmental organizations that Edraak partners with.

Sherif also leads Edraak's research department, which focuses on advancing the use of edTech in the region, improving its learning outcomes, as well as empowering the educational research ecosystem in the MENA region through educational data and tools that his team serves. 

Sherif holds a PhD degree in engineering from Stanford University, and his doctoral research focused on employing machine learning techniques to model student behaviors and outcomes in MOOCs. He developed predictive models for predicting student completion in MOOCs, and applied other machine learning and data mining techniques to student learning activity data to extract insights and improve their visualization to teachers.
